Glycomics, the analysis and identification of glycans (carbohydrates or sugar molecules), is an important but very challenging field due to the structural complexity of glycans. These molecules are crucial for a wide variety of cellular processes ranging from cell-cell communication to immunity, and they are altered in disease states such as cancer and inflammation. Their branched structures may or may not be modified with various groups such as phosphates or methyl groups; they can be linked in many different ways to proteins, lipids or each other; and distinguishing glycan isomers can be particularly problematic. In this webinar, Dr. Lara K. Mahal (New York University) will discuss the scientific challenges posed by glycans and provide an overview of the various technologies (e.g., mass spectrometry, lectin microarrays, HPLC) used to analyze the glycome. She will describe the utility and limitations of the various methods, what information can be obtained from each, and how to match techniques with experimental questions about the glycome. Dr. Anne Dell (Imperial College London) will focus on glycomic and glycoproteomic strategies incorporating mass spectrometry that can be employed in the study of glycan function as well as investigations of aberrant glycosylation and the discovery of potential glycobiomarkers.

Dr. Lara Mahal   Dr. Lara Mahal is an Associate Professor of Chemistry at New York University in the Biomedical Chemistry Institute. She obtained her B.A. in Chemistry at the University of California, Santa Cruz and her Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley. After postdoctoral training at Sloan-Kettering Institute in New York City, she started her independent career at the University of Texas at Austin in 2003. Tenured in 2009, she moved her laboratory to the new Biomedical Chemistry Institute at New York University. She is the recipient of numerous awards for her research including the Arnold and Mabel Beckman Award, a Sloan Foundation Fellowship and an NIH Director's New Innovator Award.

The Mahal Lab was one of the first to create lectin microarray technology for glycomic analysis. Research in the laboratory focuses on developing and using this technology to gain systems-level insights into glycosylation control mechanisms and the role of carbohydrates in various disease states. They are particularly interested in understanding why glycomic changes map onto disease states.
 
Dr. Anne Dell   Dr. Anne Dell, CBE FRS FMedSci, is currently the Head of the Glycobiology Training, Research and Infrastructure Centre (GlycoTRIC) at Imperial College London. She obtained her BSc in Organic Chemistry from UWA and her PhD from the University of Cambridge. She was made a Commander of the British Empire (CBE) in 2009 in recognition of services to science and has received honorary doctorates from UWA and the University of Waterloo in Canada.

Her research focuses on the development of ultra-high sensitivity mass spectrometric strategies coupled with microchemical manipulations for the characterization of complex carbohydrates and glycoproteins of biological and medical importance. A key objective is to provide the structural underpinning for international collaborative programs of research which are aimed at defining the biological roles that glycans play in health and disease.
